Welcome to the first of the Winter Wellness series. We have the whole season ahead for potential colds and the flu. So, I say we kick it off with a recipe for elderberry syrup – a powerful cold and flu remedy and prevention elixir that has been used for generations.
By now you may have heard of elderberry syrup. Its popularity skyrocketed in recent years after a few bad flu seasons. In addition to getting flu shots, people are looking for more natural options. And maybe you are too because who wants to be sick? A delicious spoonful of elderberry syrup will do the trick to strengthen your immunity and fight off those unwanted infections – it’s a no brainer.
Of course you can purchase a bottle of elderberry syrup at your local natural food store but I invite you to try making it at home. I know you’re busy! But it’s easy enough to be a satisfying weekend project and you’ll be saving money compared to the over the counter versions.
Scientific studies on the efficacy of the elderberry have shown it to reduce the severity and duration of the flu. It’s high in vitamin C and rich in antioxidant compounds so it has great overall health benefits for you. It’s no wonder this plant has been used as folk medicine and even in culinary uses like soups and teas. From my personal experience, it has helped my family stay healthy and bounce back quickly from colds. With two little kids picking up all kinds of germs from school elderberry syrup is my first line of defense (the rest of my line up, I’ll save for another time).
The First Step
The first step for making your own elderberry syrup is to source the dried berries. Order them online now so that your commitment to this project is solid. 🙂 You can’t back out once you have the main ingredient at your door step! I’ve purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs although their shipping is not as fast as we may be used with Amazon Prime. So if that’s your speed, you can find it on Amazon but it is pricier, but you will get them quicker!
Hope you try this recipe and let me know if you’ve added it to your winter wellness regimen!
Elderberry Syrup is a delicious way to prevent colds and shorten symptoms at its onset. This is a recipe I use at home with my family and my kids come running when I say it’s elderberry time! I personally have seen the benefits during many cold seasons and hope you try this natural remedy!
- 4 cups water
- 2 cups dried elderberries
- 1 stick cinnamon
- 4-5 cloves
- 2 tbsp chopped ginger root
- 1 lb raw honey
In a heavy bottomed pot, combine water, elderberries, all the spices and bring to a boil.
Cover and bring to a simmer for 45 minutes – 1 hr to reduce the liquid down for a concentration of the elderberry.
Remove pot from heat and mash the berries with a wooden spoon to extract as much juice from it as possible.
Strain the liquid in a fine mesh strainer or a cheese cloth (if you don’t mind staining).
Measure the amount of liquid that you strained and mix in the same amount of raw honey.
Transfer to a glass bottle and keep refrigerated. It should last 3-6 months in the fridge.
For kids: 1 TSP daily for prevention. Double the dosage at the first sign of a cold.
Adults: 1 TB daily for prevention. Double the dosage at the first sign of a cold.
